Proyecto Me Ama
(Project I am Loved)
We partner with the Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Armenia to provide the Homework Club, with twenty-five children meeting daily after school, in a space provided by the church. The kids are from disadvantaged and immigrant families with many social and financial needs. Two dedicated professionals provide educational support reinforcing math, reading, English, arts and music. The staff also assists the families of the children with groceries. The program provides healthy snacks and assistance with purchase of school supplies, school shoes and other necessities. The families of the children have expressed their deep gratitude for this program. The kids also take field trips and outings that they would not otherwise be able to enjoy.
Sembradores de Sonrisas
(Sowers of Smiles)
This project grew out of a partnership with the Casa de Oracion Methodist church. The program operates at a permanent location provided by Colombia Kids, a house in the neighborhood where the children who attend live. The local community and families are involved in supporting this program. Around 100 kids meet there each Saturday, organized by age group. The volunteer leaders provide age-appropriate activities and a hot meal. Check out their Instagram and see what great work they are doing.
Construyemos Ciudad
(Building Community)
Colombia Kids works with the Fe y Esperanza Methodist Church in Cartagena, serving eighty-five children ranging in age from 3 to 16. They gather every weekend for art, singing, worship and other activities. The program also serves lunch to 120 children each weekday and breakfast on Sundays, helping to address the difficult economic situation in the community. Many of the families in this community do not have sufficient resources to provide more than two meals a day for their children, and we are proud to be able to help address this situation, because we all know that a child needs to be nourished to be educated.
We are very honored to recognize Eunice, the inspiration for Colombia Kids, with this scholarship program which offers post-secondary financial aid to kids taking the next step in their growth journeys. Following her example of developing loving relationships with her kids, our local leaders will provide mentorship and a supportive community that will help our scholarship recipients stay the course and succeed..
Those of us who knew Eunice, the inspiration for Colombia Kids, know that education was a powerful tool that changed her life and many others. Because of her family’s poverty and displacement as refugees, Eunice didn’t enter school until she was 15 years old. A remarkable woman, she ultimately finished college, received a graduate degree, and served for decades as the director of San Marcos school serving hundreds of children. Even more inspiring is how Eunice spent her retirement. She started and ran a program in a needy neighborhood tutoring and mentoring at-risk kids. Eunice moved into the area where “her kids” lived and opened her home as an afterschool program. Eunice believed that every young mind deserves a chance to thrive, regardless of their financial or social circumstances.
